Workplace Personal Assistance: The Basics
The Basics | The Details | Example | Resources | Next >>
California provides In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) to eligible aged, blind, and disabled individuals so that they can live in their own homes and to support their employment activity.

Service hours allowed and paid for by IHSS can be used at the workplace as well as in the home; the total number of allowable hours is 283 hours per month.

Current rules allow for IHSS personal assistance for travel to medical appointments and other approved sites. Current rules do not allow for IHSS personal assistance when traveling to and from the workplace.

IHHS is a service available in many Medi-Cal categories depending on your needs and your life situation. You first apply for Medi-Cal, then you apply for the IHSS program if you are eligible for Medi-Cal.

The California Department of Health Care ServicesOffsite Link develops the rules for the IHSS program, which is run in the counties by the California Department of Social ServicesOffsite Link.
